Booster Club race raises funds for athletic program

Emily Mlynarek ‘14 | Features Editor

A record of 473 runners participated in Grosse Pointe South Booster Club’s 11th annual Run The Pointe event on Saturday, Oct. 12, Booster Club Treasurer and Run the Pointe Coordinator John Sohn said.

“We had another record year this year,” said Sohn. “There were a lot of not only the students from South, but parents and community members, as well as runners from outside the Grosse Pointe community that just want to try out a race in the area.”

Proceeds benefit South’s student-athletes funding uniforms, equipment, facility upgrades, training and scholarships, Sohn said.

“The Fun Run brings people together to support the sports teams at South and do something fun and health-promoting,” said cross country captain Rachel Forcillo ’14.

Run the Pointe featured a two mile fun run or walk, 5K race and 10K race around the Grosse Pointe Farms streets surrounding South.

“We love it,” said Forcillo. “ A lot of girls get PRs (Personal Records) every year because its such a familiar, comfortable and flat route.”

This year, Sohn said the Booster Club laid out some key areas for improvement in order to make the run as successful as possible.

“It went better than planned, actually,” said Sohn. “I think we did everything we wanted to do and the weather just really cooperated, I couldn’t have asked for a nicer day.”

Sohn said the key to the success of this year’s event was the tremendous amount of support from the community, students, administration, and local business.

“We are so thankful for such a great community turn out,” said Sohn. “Without them, we would not have had a successful event.”
