Varsity Soccer was defeated by De La Salle 1-0 in the first round of districts on Monday, Oct. 14 at Macomb Community College after a tough and well-played game, said coach Stefan Harris.

“We knew we had to play better than our best today to give ourselves a chance to win, and we did that,” said Harris.

The players worked very hard to stay on top of De La Salle and make the game as challenging as possible, Captain Robert Durand ’15 said.

“Nobody wants to play this team,” said Harris. “They are usually the best in the state.”

The team practiced long and hard for this game, Harris said. Their game plan was practiced repeatedly, along with watching film. South lost to De La Salle earlier in the season, 4-1, so their goal today was to prove that they had a chance.

“I’m so proud of this team; they really gave it their all,” said Durand.

The one goal that was scored by De La Salle was on a set play, but the goal was not even strength, Harris said. South definitely made it difficult for them to score.

Many players shined during this game, Harris said. Cam Kotas ’15, Chaz Bilderbeck ’14, Robert Durand ’15, and Andrew Cornwall ’14 were some of the key players.

“Durand has been on varsity since freshman year, and has played every minute,” said Harris. “Kotas was fantastic, too.”

As for the seniors, this was their last game as a member of South’s varsity team, Captain Murray Sales ’14 said

“It’s been awesome to play with these guys the last four years and I’m honored to be a part of this team,” said Sales.

Even though it was a loss that brought the season to an end, the team has had a great run, Sales said.
