Volleyball tri-match to raise funds for cancer

Volleyball tri-match to raise funds for cancer

By Ariana Serventi ’15 | Staff Writer

Today, Tuesday, September 17th, the girl’s varsity volleyball team will be playing a benefit match to support cancer, at The University of Liggett School.

“We’ve played four tournaments so far this year, so we’ve been preparing very well,” said Coach Kevin Nugent.

The team will be playing against Grosse Pointe North and Liggett, said Nugent. The game between North will be at 5:30 pm and the one against Liggett at 7:00 pm.

“The team practices a couple of hours a day, and we’ve been working really hard to figure out everyone’s skill set,” said Nugent.

Instead of just representing cancer as a whole, each school contributing in the event will be sponsoring a different cancer.

“Each school is representing a different type of cancer and honoring a different person. For South we are representing leukemia and honoring Mr. Nardone,” said player Kayla Stanek ’15.

Grosse Pointe North will be representing pancreatic cancer, while Liggett will be doing breast cancer, Nugent said.

Since one of the main points of the benefit is to raise money, there will be tables set up selling baked goods, Nugent said.

“There are many components in the fundraising, and they all go to Relay for Life,” said Nugent.

This will be Stanek’s second year participating in this type of event.

“Last year we hosted (at South), doing the same thing as we are doing this year,” said Stanek.

As for other ways to raise money, part of the 5 dollar entrance fee will be donated to support each cancer, Nugent said.
