In their first game of the regular season, the girls varsity tennis team overpowered North 7-1 on Tuesday, April 15, at Elworthy Park.

High school tennis is competed in both doubles and singles, meaning competitors either compete with a partner or on their own.

In its match against North yesterday, South swept the doubles competitions.

“I’m really pleased, because we’ve only had twenty minutes of outdoor practice since the start of the season, in one month we’ve played outside twenty minutes, so for us not practicing outside and just coming outside to play a match, I’m pretty happy,” said head coach Mark Sobieralski.

The number one doubles team of Sydney Keller ’14 and Samantha Perry ’14 defeated North’s number one doubles team with ease, sweeping the first two sets, 6-0.

In the second longest match of the evening, lasting about two hours, South’s number one singles player Carmella Goree ‘15 fell to North’s number one singles player, Ali Scoggin ‘13 in two sets, 6-7 and 2-7.

In the evening’s longest match, lasting about two and a half hours long, Brooke Willard ’14, South’s number two singles player, took on North’s number two doubles player. After falling behind a set, Willard came from behind and won two straight sets to win the match, 2-6, 7-6, and 6-2.

South’s number three and four singles players Maggie Sweeney ’15 and Madie Flournoy ’16 both won their matches in two sets, 6-0, 6-1 and 6-1, 6-1.

South’s number two doubles team of Ginny Hayden ’15 and Jenny Moy ’15 won their match comfortably against North’s number two doubles team, 6-0, and 6-1. The number three doubles team of Angelica Kalogeridis ’15 and Kate Krueger ’14 won their match in two sets, 6-2 and 6-0. The number four doubles team of Morgane Flournoy ’15  and Kelly Beardslee ’15 also won their match in two sets as well, with the same score, 6-2, and 6-0.

During the matches, Sobieralski said he was very impressed with their serving considering their lack of preparation time with sun in their eyes and wind at their back.

Looking forward Sobieralski has high expectations, and likes his team’s chances, even though they are young.

“We want to win a state title, I’m serious, I want to win states, we’ve got a good shot, we’re ranked number three right now, but that’s our goal,” said Sobieralski. “Even though we’re young, we have no seniors on this team, we’re young, but we’re good, our kids are good and we’ve got a really hard working team.”
