The Boys hockey team’s playoff run ended in the state quarterfinal on Tuesday, March 5, after allowing Port Huron Northern to score four unanswered goals, resulting in a 4-3 loss.

A hot first period began with South scoring the first three goals of the game. Paired with a great defensive effort, the boys only allowed one goal late in the first period. A solid first period ended with the Blue Devils leading 3-1 with goals coming from Andrew Hyde ’14, Max Corden ’13, and Jake Corden ’13.

The defense stayed strong throughout a majority of the second period but multiple penalties gave Port Huron Northern chances in South’s offensive zone. The boys killed the penalties well until the final two minutes of the second period when Port Huron Northern tallied their second goal cutting the boys lead to 3-2.

A quick goal in the beginning of the third period tied the game 3-3 and left the boys lifeless. A sloppy penalty with less than seven minutes gave Northern a one man advantage and they capitalized on the opportunity scoring their fourth unanswered goal of the game, giving them the lead.

“It was a great year,” said Max Corden. “My brother and I have a lot of great memories that were made these past four years and we wish the team the best of luck next year.”

Although the boys could not repeat the success of last year’s State Championship berth, they were satisfied with their run, Corden said.
