Boys basketball loses a heart breaker to Madison in OT

In heartbreaking fashion, the Blue Devils varsity boys basketball team fell to the Madison Eagles 63-61 in overtime on Tuesday, Feb.12.

Despite losing to Madison by double digits in their contest on Jan. 17, the boys came out firing on all cylinders on both sides of the ball, playing some of their best basketball of the season.

However, the game was a tale of two halves. Despite a 27-21 lead at the half, Madison erupted for 22 points in the third quarter and took a 43-38 lead into the fourth.

Guard Josh Mays ’13, who has played sparingly this season, was the key player in the game. With the Blue Devils trailing 49-53 with just over three minutes to go, Mays drove the lane and pulled up for a floater to cut the lead to two. The very next possession, Mays took on three defenders in the paint and finished with an acrobatic layup to tie the game at 53.

Those four points were a huge momentum swing for the boys who pushed what looked like a loss into overtime. In the extra session, the Blue Devils exchanged buckets with the Eagles, but poor clock management at the end doomed them at the buzzer.

The Blue Devils will head to Fraser on Thursday, Feb. 14 and look towards improving for districts on Monday, March 4.
