Wrestling season ends with hopes to improve next season

Andrew Cullen ’14 | Staff Writer

The South wrestling team finished off their season at Roseville in the District competition, on Saturday, Feb. 9, Head Coach Greg Snider said.

Strides were made by the team this season, Snider said.

“We have a young team that’s made a lot of progress over the season,” said Snider. “We are very close to our goals that we set at the beginning of the year.”

There were a few problems faced by the team this year, Assistant Coach Paul Zambito said. For one thing, it was harder to teach the younger wrestlers, because the high school wrestling program differs from the middle school program.

“They have been improving a lot,” said Zambito. “We had to start from the beginning because of how the middle school and high school programs are connected. They aren’t really interlaced; we’re not teaching the same things right now because of how they are coached.”

The team competed at the league meet last week, Snider said. The team also finished their division dual meets, which were individual competitions.

“Alex Manchester (’14) and Tommy Flynn (’13) both won a match,” said Snider. “We finished 3-3 in the division.”

Snider said there were a few meets that were very close. They came down to one match and were down to the wire. The team did not win, however.

Although this year’s team was small, the number of members increased, Drew Simon ’14 said.  He also added the higher number of younger wrestlers will improve and so will the size of the team in the future.

“The amount of people on the team has risen up from last year,” said Simon. “Some of our wrestlers have gotten better. It’s good that we have the number of underclassmen, because it will be a big team within the next few years.”
