Five positive sports predictions for 2013

Matt Riashi ’13 | Sports Editor

1) In 2013, Michigan State football will continue on their backward track. Much like in 2012, their offense will struggle, while their defense will go through growing pains early, they will eventually form into a formidable defense. They will finish the season 7-5 with a close loss to Michigan. The Spartans will land a bowl berth and will finish the season with a win against a ranked opponent.

Michigan State’s cross state rival, Michigan will see much improvement on the offensive side of the ball from the arm of Devin Gardner. In week two, Michigan will take down top 5 ranked Notre Dame under the lights in Ann Arbor. Michigan then will ride the momentum from that win to an 11-1 record, with a win over OSU in the season finale, landing them a spot in the Big Ten Championship game. In a rematch with Ohio State, the Wolverines won’t come out on top. Michigan will finish the season 11-2 and play in the Orange Bowl.

2) The Tigers will win 98 games and will win the AL Central by nine games over the Kansas City Royals. The Tigers will then take down the Royals in four games in the ALDS. In the ALCS the Tigers will beat the Rays in seven games to go to the World Series. This time in the World Series the Tigers will defeat the Washington Nationals in six games.

3) The Red Wings will finish the shortened 48 game season around .500, and will make it to the playoffs. The Red Wings will find more success in the playoffs and will upset two higher seeds, but will run out of luck and lose in the Western Conference finals to the St. Louis Blues.

4) The Pistons will continue to lose and will finish at the bottom of the Eastern Conference with a 33-49 record. With another year of losing the Pistons will land a top pick in the 2013 NBA draft and will land another top talent for the future.

5)  In Basketball, Michigan will split the Big Ten regular season Championship with Indiana and earn a one seed for the NCAA tournament. In the tournament Michigan will find some success, but will lose in the Elite Eight.  The Spartans will coast through the regular season and Michigan State will finish fourth in the Big Ten regular season, but the Spartans will turn it on in the end by winning the Big Ten Tournament. In the NCAA tournament the Spartans will be knocked out in the second round by a lower seed.
