Worst Detroit sports moments of 2012

10) April 13 –Sept. 17 Tigers season

From April 13 to Sept. 17 the Tigers were playing roughly .500 baseball. They were frustrating and stagnant. During the majority of this time the Tigers were chasing the White Sox in the AL Central. With high expectations coming into the season, nobody was happy with the way the Tigers were playing, and many had them buried on Sept. 17, when they were three games out of first. While the agony of these six months was tough to go through, the Tigers caught fire at the end of September.

9) Michigan vs. Alabama Sept. 1

This game was just embarrassing. Not just for Michigan, but the whole Big Ten. Michigan hardly put up a fight and lost 41-14. Quarterback Denard Robinson was kept in check for the most part and threw two interceptions. Throughout the blowout Alabama was continually running the ball down Michigan’s throat.

8) Michigan vs. Ohio State Nov. 24

The two quarterback system Michigan was running at this point in the season was working in the first half against OSU. At the half the Wolverines went up 21-20 in Columbus. In the second half, for some reason Michigan never used the two Quarterback offense and failed to cross the 50 yard line. Michigan went on to lose the game 26-21, watching their arch rival, Ohio State, go 12-0.

7)  NHL Lockout Sept. 15-Jan. 6

Much like in the early 2000’s the NHL owners locked out the players. No games were played for 113 days, leaving Red Wing fans with no hockey. The lockout ended on Jan. 6 and the Red Wings will play a 48 game schedule starting on Jan. 19.

6) Almost every Pistons game

Yes. Almost every Pistons game is a bad moment for Detroit. There has been a major shift in the competitiveness of this team, compared to the teams from the early to mid 2000s, for those who aren’t watching. They have young talent, but they always find ways to lose games late, either by a lack of scoring or poor defense.

5) Michigan State vs. Ohio State March 4

On March 4, Michigan State and Ohio State met on the hardwood. If Michigan State won the game they would clinch the Big Ten regular season championship. And with an OSU win they would have to split it with Michigan and Ohio State. Michigan State and Ohio State battled all game, but William Buford spoiled the celebration in East Lansing when he hit a game winner with two seconds left. All was not lost for MSU. They went on to beat OSU in the Big Ten Tournament Championship earning a number one seed in the NCAA tournament.

4) Michigan State vs. Michigan Oct. 20

Christmas came early for Spartans this year, when they decided to wear helmets that looked like Christmas ornaments. But what might have been even uglier was the game; Michigan State lost not giving up a TD. The Spartan defense held Michigan to 12 points and four field goals and lost, 12-10.

3) Michigan vs. Ohio NCAA tournament March 16

After winning the Big Ten regular season championship and earning a 4 seed in the 2012 NCAA tournament, Michigan forgot how to make a layup. Michigan missed many easy buckets early in this game and were upset by the Mid-American Conference Champion Ohio Bobcats in the first round.

2) Michigan State vs. Nebraska Nov. 3

With a 10 point lead and 8 minutes left you would think Michigan State could win this game. Nope. Nebraska turned up the heat on MSU in the final minute. Only down three, the Cornhuskers threw a ball near the end zone and got a phantom pass interference call on an MSU cornerback that set up a game winning TD for Nebraska. Fate was not on the Spartans side on this day. Earlier in 4th quarter Michigan State had an interception return for a TD called back on an unnecessary roughness. If the Spartans had won this game, Michigan would have gained a lead in the Legends division and could have possibly been in the Big Ten Championship game, only causing more frustration in the Detroit area.

1) All four games in the World Series Oct. 24-Oct. 28

After a great first two rounds of the playoffs, the Tigers In most peoples eyes were the favorites to win the World Series. They lost the series to the Giants, which was not a shock, but what was depressing is the way they lost. The Tigers, showed up in San Francisco after two weeks off, and they were not the same team that swept the Yankees in the ALCS. The Tigers were swept, losing this World Series in much similar fashion as in 2006, when they lost in five games to the Cardinals. Scoring only six runs in the series the Tigers didn’t put up much of a fight.
