Athletes expect holiday break practices to payoff

Games and practices will continue for winter athletes during the 15 consecutive days of holiday break.

There will be nine varsity games during break, plus both freshman and junior varsity games.

Playing over break has its pros and cons, varsity basketball player Charlie Warren ’14 said

“Playing games and practicing over break is something that needs to be done because of our full playing schedule,” said Warren. “However, sometimes it can get annoying because it doesn’t allow for a full vacation experience.”

Team events over break have prevented him from traveling, Warren said.

“Flying out and spending the holidays with some of my family members that live far away would be nice,” said Warren. “But, I have made a commitment to my team and can’t miss any practices or our game.”

Playing over break isn’t something new, or exclusive to basketball. Like the other winter sports, boys swimming has events over break.

Swimmer Khaled Elbadawi ‘14 says he doesn’t mind the ten practices and meet over break.

“I like swimming over break,” said Elbadawi. “It gives me something fun to do with my team over the break and helps me become a better swimmer.”

The practices over break help the team maintain performance, Elbadawi said.

“If the team didn’t swim over break, we probably wouldn’t stay in shape,” said Elbadawi. “So, we need to keep swimming so that we don’t lose everything we have worked for.”

The teams playing over break look to improve while other students unwind.

“The extra time on the court over break will really help our team,” said Warren. “Hopefully after break we come out playing good basketball and win some games.”
