‘Capricious’ store in the Hill offers upscale holiday gifts

Blair Paddock ’14| Staff Writer

Recently opened on The Hill, Capricious boutique offers a unique opportunity for students’ holiday shopping.

“We have something for everyone,” said Manager Erica Panagopoulus. “We have a price point where anyone who comes in could find something.”

Capricious offers a variety of shoes, handbags, jewelry, scarves, books, and nail and foot care products, said Panagopolous. They also offer a selection of designer brands such as Ralph Lauren and Steward Weitzman.

The owner of Capricious, Gretchen Valade, also owns The Dirty Dog Jazz Cafe and Morning Glory Coffee & Pastries. Valade said that she chose this location for the shoe store because she thinks The Hill needs a retail business.

“I felt that we needed a decent shoe store in town,” said Valade. “Rather than wait for one to open, I decided to take matters into my own hands.”

Panagopoulus said that the store has been well received in the community. Valade said that they’ve only been open for a couple of weeks but they’re off to a good start.

Capricious has great gift ideas, Valade said. They will start carrying gloves and gift sets for the holidays.

“We have a wide range of merchandise at different price points,” said Valade. “So I guess it depends on their (students’) allowance and/or what they’re earning at their job.”

Maggie Sweeney ’15 said that she heard about the store from her mom and “Grosse Pointey,” a social media presence that connects the Grosse Pointe community. The store caught her eye because of its professional appearance.

“The way it looked inside and how nice and professional it looked made me want to shop there,” said Sweeney. “It wasn’t like any shoe store you would usually go to because of the chandeliers and everything inside.”

Capricious is open Tuesday and Wednesday from 9:30 am to 5:30 pm, Thursday from 9:30 am to 7:00 pm, and Friday and Saturday from 9:30 am to 5:30 pm. It is closed Sunday and Monday. It is located on 74 Kercheval, on the Hill.
