Practice ACT can improve junior’s scores

Carly Walkowiak ’14 | Staff Writer

On Tuesday, Nov. 13 the Junior class will take a free practice ACT test at Grosse Pointe South beginning at 8 a.m.

“Practice tests (that are taken at south) are almost identical to the actual test,” said Molly Kaiser ’13. “Down to the time limits and the breaks.”

The test is provided by the Princeton Review and not only are they providing the free test, but representatives from the Princeton Review will host a parent night  on Thursday, Dec. 6 at 7 p.m.  at South. During the parent night, they will distribute the score results and provide testing tips and strategies, said Marna Ignagni, the test’s organizer.

This is the second free test juniors have taken in preparation for the ACT, which provides them with a personal response and ways they could improve their scores for the actual ACT test.

“When we had a meeting after taking the PLAN test sophomore year, it was so nice being able to look at feedback specifically for me,” Kaiser said. “I had a year to improve on the skills that I lacked, and recognize what I was doing well in and continue that pattern.”

Now that the juniors are taking another test very similar to the PLAN, they have the opportunity to compare their feedback from both tests with a time period, said Kaiser, which will let them see if they improved in the areas that they lacked before.

“It was such a help knowing what I had to work on rather than just dealing with numbers,” Wade Pennman ’14 said.  “I’m eager to see where I am a half of a year later.”

The test is supposed to be very similar to the ACT, said Ignagni. Even if it wasn’t, simulated testing practice can’t hurt.

“The test should definitely make their results better than they would be without the extra practice,” Ignagni said. “It’s not a waste of time depending on how they go into it.”

The test will begin at 8 a.m. and end around noon.  Juniors with the last name A through H will test in the field gym, Juniors I through S will test in the practice gym, and juniors T through Z will test in the room 164, said Ignagni.

The guidelines state students are expected to bring an ID, No. 2 pencils, and a graphing calculator.  Cell phones should be left in students’ lockers.
