For the third time this season the varsity men’s soccer team defeated Grosse Pointe North in the District semifinal Wednesday night.

“We knew it was going to be a dogfight,” said captain Alex Detwiler ’13. “We just had to beat North when it really mattered and we did.”

South had success against its crosstown rival all season defeating them twice in division play including once in a shootout. This game however would not prove to be the nail biter that most expected.

For the first 20 minutes of the game, the Norsemen controlled the tempo firing numerous shots at goaltender Noel Fets ’13. After several saves the team seemed to wake up, thanks to great punts down field from Fets leading to scoring opportunities.

This allowed the Blue Devils to strike before half on a one timer to captain Andrew Cornwall ’14 with 11 minutes left in the first half.

“Noel’s saves were huge for us,” said Wade Penman ’14. “He really gave us the momentum in the first half.”

At the half, the Devils went in up 1-0 looking to finish off a team fighting for their lives in the second half. The Devils would have none of it. At the start of the second half, the team controlled the play for all 40 minutes. Multiple saves by North goalkeeper kept the Norsemen in the game, but it was not enough. The Blue Devils’ defense put the clamps on the Norsemen offense to help seal the game.

Great footwork and a shot from Mark Adamaszek ’13 helped seal the victory, clinching a third undefeated season versus North.

“It’s sort of a bittersweet feeling,” said Detwiler. “It’s sad playing North for the last time because of the success we’ve had against them since I’ve been here.

The Blue Devils will take on the Lakeview Huskies at Grosse Pointe North tonight at 6 p.m. in the District final. The Huskies defeated Roseville 2-0 in the other semifinal.
