In the first game of the playoffs and the last game of their season, the varsity football team lost to the Detroit Cass Tech Technicians 37-3.

The game, featuring two sophomore starters at quarterback, was the first time that the Blue Devils had played in a Division 1 district playoff game.

After a 30-yard touchdown run and a long drive resulting in a one yard rushing touchdown, Cass Tech took an early 14-0 lead over the Blue Devils.

Soon after, South drove down the field. Behind a few consecutive completed passes from Ryan Liagre ’15, Liam McIlroy ’13 kicked a 31-yard field goal to cut the deficit to 14-3 with 1:37 left in the first half.

Answering back, Cass Tech scored on the first play of their ensuing possession with a 53-yard touchdown run. Just over a minute later, after a South fumble, Cass Tech rushed for another touchdown, putting themselves up 27-3 at the half.

In the fourth quarter, Cass Tech extended its lead with a 21-yard field goal and yet another big run, this time for 38 yards. Cass Tech would go on to win 37-3.

“For our first time in the Division 1 playoffs, it was a tough draw to play the defending state champs,” said Head Coach Tim Brandon. “Cass Tech is a great team and all the credit goes to them.”

The Blue Devils finished their season 8-2. One of the varsity football teams best records since 1988, when they also finished 8-2.

“We had a good season. We accomplished most of our goals. Obviously, we wanted to make a longer run in the playoffs,” said Brandon.

The seniors set a great example for younger players and set a strong foundation for years to come, Brandon said.

“Our kids played hard. They’re a great group of kids with great character,” said Brandon. “I couldn’t be more proud of them.”
