Yesterday, Mar. 11, the varsity boys’ basketball team was defeated by the seventh ranked Detroit East English Village in the opening round of the playoffs, 75-64. This is the second year in a row the team has lost to Detroit East English Village in the first round of the playoffs.

“The kids played hard, we had a chance,” head coach Troy Glasser said. “A couple of bounces the other way and that’s the difference the game.”

Sam Blanzy ’15 was able to carry the team early, scoring ten of his fourteen points in the first quarter.  Despite six of the twelve players on South scoring in the second quarter, the Blue Devils still trailed going into the half time break, 43-34.

The half time break played in South’s favor, as they were able to come out hot. The Blue Devils started the second half on an 8-3 run, cutting their deficit to just four.  Jack Maher ’16 was able to force turnovers and wrap up an offensive rebound in the third quarter which kept it close.

Despite a few glances of what may be a comeback, East English had an answer for every run. They hit their free throws consistently and forced turnovers with their press.

“We battled them and they knew we would, they did not take us lightly,” Glasser said. “I think our program is trending in the right way, becoming more competitive.”

Wrapping up the season with a 13-9 record, Glasser said the team takes pride in the fact that they competed and were in every game of the season.

Glasser mentioned that there was not one game this season that the team was without any injuries, and that was the first time he has seen that in his coaching career.

“This senior class is really a great group of kids, they’re winners.” Glasser said. “They taught us how to win.”

Nate Hall ’16 said that he is confident that as long as the team works hard, that they will be successful next year.

“We don’t rebuild,” Glasser said. “We reload.”
