Girls tennis to compete at states at Midland Dow

With a perfect record and a number one ranking, the girls varsity tennis team travels to states at Midland Dow this weekend with a state championship as the goal, Head Coach Mark Sobieralski said.

The team finished third at last year’s state championship, and of the 12 that competed there last year, ten are returning.

Sobieralski mentioned the fact that this team has a lot of experience, and that gives him confidence going into states, they’ve been here before. Although the third place finish was strong, Sobieralski said that, given their experience, the girls want more this year.

“Some of the kids didn’t do as well as they wanted to last year, but they’re hungry,” said Sobieralski. “We’re ready to roll.”

If every flight does what they’re supposed to do, the team has a good chance of taking home the title, Sobieralski said.

“Going into states, our team’s mentality is to take no match lightly,” said Sydney Keller ’14. “You could be playing the number one seed or a team you’ve never heard of, but every match counts.”

Winning the first match and continued consistency are what Sobieralski said the keys to the weekend are.

“You lose you’re done, there are no second chances,” said Sobieralski.
