Soccer team shuts out North, 1-0

By Katie Murphy ’14 | Staff Writer

They have not lost to North in four years, and that streak continued on Monday, Oct. 7 when the Boys’ Varsity Soccer team pulled out another 1-0 win.

Seth Carolan ’16 scored the only goal of the night with an assist by Cam Kotas ’15, said captain Andrew Cornwall ’14. The win was a great way to end their season in the MAC White, he added.

“Seth Carolan’s goal was the biggest key of the game,” said coach Stefan Harris. “I tell the guys no shot is a bad shot. Hit the ball in the net and you never know what is going to happen, and he hit it perfectly.”

Locking up second place in the MAC White behind Fraser, the team had a successful season this year, said Harris. Although the North game would not have affected the team’s place in the MAC White, it was nice for the team to come out and beat their rival one last time in the regular season.

“It is always nice to beat Grosse Pointe North twice,” said Harris. “I know that the graduating class this year has never lost to Grosse Pointe North.”

Another key component of the game was goal keeper Murray Sales’ ’14 defensive saves, said Harris. He aided the team on the defensive side, leading them to their victory.

“We had some bad mental lapses in the early part of the game when we probably should have scored,” said Harris. “But we tightened it up in the second half, and Murray, our keeper, really had some great saves, which was probably the second biggest thing that helped us in that game.”

On Monday, Oct. 14, the team begins their first round of districts against De La Salle at Macomb Community College, said Harris.

“I am really excited to play De La Salle,” said Cornwall. “It should be a good game, and will hopefully come out in a victory for us.”

The first round of districts will be held at different fields around the area, said Harris. The semifinal and final games of districts will be held on Oct. 17-19 at Fraser High School.

“We feel confident that we have not lost to North yet and we got the win right before districts,” said captain Robert Durand ’15.

The win against North will only aid the team as they begin the district play offs, said Cornwall. Feeling confident in its play, the team has high expectations for the rest of their season.

“We all played well, and a lot of people stepped up,” said Cornwall. “It is a little sad that it is our last game, but at least I finished playing them by never losing to North in my four years playing for South.”
