Falling just short of victory, South lost to Utica Eisenhower 6-0 on Friday, Sept. 20, following a last second touchdown attempt.

“It’s a tough loss,” said Head Coach Tim Brandon. “It’s our third tough loss.”

With only 3.5 seconds left in the game, South had the ball at Eisenhower’s 10 yard line, aiming for the endzone. However, the pass was deflected by an Eisenhower player as time expired.

“We really should’ve had it, we just couldn’t pull it off at the end,” said receiver Jordan Spratt ‘14.

This game especially was another very tough loss during what has been a very emotional season, Captain Caleb Cimmarrusti ‘14 said.

“You really want to win games like these,” said Cimmarrusti. “We’re one and three. Three of the games we’ve been in we could’ve won, and we haven’t won three of them.”

Earlier in the season South lost to University of Detroit Jesuit 17-7 and L’Anse Creuse North 39-37, before beating Fraser 24-13.

“It really stinks to lose,” said Cimmarrusti. “In football you only get nine games, losing three out of the first four, it’s the worst.”

Both the Eisenhower game and the L’Anse Creuse North game were heartbreakers that came down to the final seconds.

“We were inches away from touchdowns multiple times,” said Cimmarrusti. “They made their second field goal by a couple inches, and those were inches we needed to take, and we didn’t.”

Despite already having three losses, the season is far from over, and the team can still be successful, Brandon said.

“Going forward we have to win every game,” said Brandon. “We have to focus and concentrate, and go after every game left on our schedule.”

South’s annual Homecoming game next week will be the beginning of that process, Brandon said.

“We’re going to have to practice real hard, that’s for sure,” said Spratt. “We need to get ready for Homecoming, we’ve got to win that one.”

In order to see success in the upcoming games, South needs to come together as a team, Cimmarrusti said.

“Every game matters from now on,” said Cimmarrusti.

Brandon said he thinks all of the games that remain on the team’s schedule are winnable.

“Each and every one of our goals is still out there,” said Brandon. “The team needs to know right now that they can do it. If they come together, if they go to work, they can do it.”
