Celebration wracked the side lines as quarterback Richie Kish ’14 kneed the ball to run out the clock.

This marked the team’s first win of the season, defeating Fraser High School 24-13 at Fraser on Friday Sept. 13.

“We absolutely had to win,” said Head Coach Tim Brandon. “This was an opponent that we knew we were better than, so we came out and did what we had to do.”

The team had a great defensive effort in the first half and throughout the game, accumulating many sacks, and forcing Fraser to punt multiple times.

Offensively however, South struggled in the first half, fumbling twice, and trailing 13-10 at the end of the half. Their only points came from a field goal in the first quarter by Andrew Fabry ’15, and a touchdown pass from Kish to Jordan Spratt ’14 in the second quarter.

“We turned it over way too many times; had way too many fumbles,” said Kish. “We can’t win a football game that way.”

In the second half, the team dominated Fraser, shutting them out for the remainder of the game.

“A couple of mistakes in the first half kept it too close, but we came out in the second half and started our dominance, “said Brandon. “It was a good game because it was a win.”

The offense also did well in the second half with two rushing touchdowns, first from Zack Thalgott ’15 in the third quarter, then from Sam Hunter ’15 in the fourth.

“As the game went on in the second half we played really well,” said Kish. “We didn’t turn the ball over, we put together drives and got first downs. We had an all around good second half.”

South was glad to finally get a much deserved win, especially after a last second loss last week against L’Anse Creuse North.

“It’s good to finally get a win,” said Kish. “It didn’t come easy, we really had to work for it, and it just feels great.”

The team has set their goals high as they hope to beat Eisenhower, a top-ranked team in the state, at home next week.

“We’re going to take this winning feeling, and we’re going to carry it over into next week,” said Kish.

Eisenhower will be quite a challenge next week, Brandon said.

“It’s a great team, a great program,” said Brandon. “Second biggest school in the state, they will have 80 kids on their Varsity team.”

Brandon doesn’t think these numbers will affect the outcome of the game, he said.

“It’s David and Goliath,” said Brandon. “We’ll show up prepared and ready to play them.”

Brandon hopes the team will continue to put in the time and effort, he said.

“We just need to work hard and we’ll be successful,” said Brandon.
