Senior Class plans to fill time capsule at this year’s All Night Party

By Lindsey Mestdagh ’13 | Staff Writer

As part of the Senior Class’ All Night Party on the night of graduation, there will be a time capsule ceremony as a way for the Senior Class to hold onto their thoughts and opinions as high school graduates, senior parent Pamela Flom said.

“All of the seniors attending the All Night Party will participate,” said Flom. “They will do this as part of the activities in the auditorium in the wee hours of the morning.”

The time capsule is a new idea as it has only been done the last few years, Flom said.

“They didn’t do it in my school, but I think it would be very interesting and enlightening to see what we thought was so important in high school many, many, years ago,” said Flom.

The type of capsule varies each year depending on the class officers and what they purchase to store the capsule items, Flom said.

“It is a great way to end such four memorable years,” said Senior Class President Kelly Cullen.

It will be so exciting to look back and see everything that we put in and what we saw to be so valuable at the time, Cullen said.

“People will change so much over the next few years that it’ll be interesting to reunite with classmates and then be brought back to the people we once were in high school,” Cullen said.

The time capsule captures students’ thoughts, info, photos, and individual responses to questions determined by the current class officers, South parent and alumna Mary Naber said.

Part of the time capsule is also the yearbook, which is another documentation of the class and the current times, Flom said.

Cullen plans to add memorable pictures of her family and friends along with her “paint jeans” that she wore to every float party sophomore through senior year to the time capsule, she said.

“The kids seemed to like filling out the forms and threw in photos from the photo booth that was at the party,” said Naber.

Naber is in possession of the Class of 2012’s time capsule; however, the plan is for the class president to keep it, Naber said.

“The real fun will be at the reunion and how they decide to show the stuff in the capsule,” said Naber.

There are no specific restrictions to what can be put into the time capsule at this time, just that the items need to fit, Naber said.

“The capsule is to be opened at the class of 2013’s five year reunion, however they can wait until the ten year,” said Naber. “It would even be fun to refill at each reunion.”

The idea has been run through officers and students, and they have all seemed to like it in previous years, Naber said.

“Hopefully it will be one more fun thing as part of a reunion,” said Flom. “It’s always a fun thing to return back to Grosse Pointe every 10 years to re-connect with classmates.”
