Yesterday, Mar. 11, the girls varsity basketball team fell to Detroit Martin Luther King High School, 43-36, in the Regional semi-finals at South.

The Lady Blue Devils were able to gain an early 9-2 lead after the first quarter. Cierra Rice ’15 hit a three pointer early in the quarter, and Anna Carmody ’16 added four points.

Aliezza Brown ’15 opened up the second quarter with a fast break basket on a pass from Rice. South’s lead was nine at the time, and Head Coach Kevin Richards said this is when the team began to settle for three pointers instead of easy baskets.

“We were going for the knockout, rather than going to the basket,” said Richards.

It was at this point that King made their come back, striking with a 10-2 run in the second quarter. South still held a 13-12 lead at the half time break.

The momentum shifted in King’s favor once the second half started. They went on a 9-2 run of their own to give them a 21-15 lead. Once King took the lead they never looked back as they were able to comfortably hold a lead for the remainder of the game.

South’s season came to an end as they fell to King in the Regional Semi-Final, 43-36.

“I think our effort was great, we said we needed an ugly game and we got an ugly game,” said Richards. “We just didn’t get shots to fall.”

Richards said that this was probably their best defensive game of the year, and he was impressed with their success rebounding.

“King is a great team, they forced turnovers, made us play faster than we wanted,” Richards said. “I can’t be mad with our effort, we played as hard as we could.”
