Boys hockey dominates North, 7-3

The boys varsity hockey team defeated Grosse Pointe North last night for the second time this season, 7-3.

Early major penalties by North led to South’s offense striking quickly to put them on the board first with three goals.  North would eventually respond but could not narrow the scoring gap the rest of the game.

“Our five minute power play really helped us out to get on the board early, and we just simply out worked them,” Zach Kohut ’15 said.  “And Andy Jakub (’15, goalie) played out of his mind tonight.”

Jakub only allowed three goals on the night compared to North’s goalie who was getting peppered the entire game with shots and follow-up rebounds.

“Well, we played a hockey game, we worked pretty hard,” Jakub said. “It was not our best game, but we got the win. Playing North is always fun, especially in front of all our friends.”

Despite the strong performance by the varsity puck squad Thursday night, there are still areas to improve on.

“Our penalty kill and power play was awesome, but we need to stop taking so many penalties,” Adam Pitters ’17 said.  “We need to win the 50/50 battles at mid ice and on the boards.  This will make a tremendous difference when playoffs come and the games start to become really close.”

The team plays again on Saturday against Saginaw in its second game of the Trenton Showcase.
