Girls Cross Country places seventh in state competition

By Ethan Sloan ‘ 16 | Staff Writer

On Saturday, November 2nd the Girls Cross-Country team came in seventh place out of 28 teams at the state finals. Two runners also earned all-state honors.

Seven girls competed in the state finals: Ersula Farrow ’15, Kelsie Schwartz ’14, Alexa Calas ’14, Anna Piccione ’16, Kamryn Leonard ‘17, Mary Spencer ’15, and Megan Sklarski ’15, Head-Coach Stephen Zaranek said.

Out of the seven girls that ran, Farrow and Schwartz qualified as all-state runners by finishing in the top 30, Zaranek said.

“We put in an outstanding effort,” said Zaranek. “We didn’t have the best team in the state, but we had a solid top ten finish, which was our goal.”

South placed seventh out of 28 teams with a total of 236 points, Zaranek said.

“It’s a really crazy race, but it’s humbling,” said Schwartz.  “They’re the best in the state. I’m honored to run with them.”

Schwartz ran a time of 18:37, and has run in states every year since she was a freshman.

“I came in 27th, and I passed five girls within the last 100 meters, and if I hadn’t, I wouldn’t have been all-state,” said Schwartz.

Farrow came in seventh place, and finished first out of all the South runners, Zaranek said.

“This is the 34th year in a row we’ve qualified for states, and the fifth year that we were in the top ten,” said Zaranek. “I think we will make it next year, especially since five of our seven runners are returning.”

In boys cross country news, captain Nicholas DeBrunner ‘14 ran in states, recording a time of 17:24. He came in 202nd place out of 262 participants.
