Major conflict between football games this Saturday

Major+conflict+between+football+games+this+Saturday

On Saturday, Nov. 2, there will be two major football matchups: at the collegiate level, Michigan will be playing at Michigan State, while at the high school level, Grosse Pointe South takes on Cass Tech in the first round of the playoffs.

While it will certainly be an exciting weekend for football fans, the coinciding games have presented a conflict of interest. The Michigan-Michigan State game has stolen some attention away from the Blue Devil’ match-up.

Aynslie Fritz ’14, a cheerleader, noted the problems that the double booking has caused for some student’s social lives.

“I had been planning to go up to State for the game,” said Fritz, “but I can’t, because I’ll be cheerleading at South’s game.”

The Michigan-Michigan State game has taken a lot of awareness away from the South-Cass Tech one, said Fritz. Some people have had plans regarding the Michigan-MSU game for weeks.

Still, wide receiver Jack Strachan ’14 is not too concerned with scheduling.

Michigan-MSU hasn’t really stolen too much attention from South’s game, Strachan said, as most people are able to pay attention to both events. If anything, Strachan has been let down by the competitive nature that usually surrounds the Michigan-MSU game, as the excitement has not been apparent.

“I’m kind of disappointed by the Michigan-MSU game’s fervor,” said Strachan.

Some fans, such as math teacher David Martin, have been able to maintain excitement for both games. Martin plans to watch both games, and is very excited for South’s game against Cass Tech.

“It’s sort a David vs. Goliath thing,” said Martin. “It’ll take a perfect, fundamentally sound game for them to win this thing.”

Still, Martin was able to come up with a game plan for Michigan, his alma mater, as well.  He has been wearing Michigan apparel all week; this game is important to him, too.

“Michigan need’s to get out to an early lead,” said Martin. “If they fall behind, they’re done.”

This could be the last game for some Senior football players, and they won’t let themselves be distracted by scheduling conflicts, they said.

“I’m really excited,” said football player Michael Boctor ’14. “This is my last year at South, and I can’t wait to go out and have a strong game against some really good competition.”

The Michigan-Michigan State game begins at 3:30 p.m. in East Lansing, while South’s game starts at 1 p.m. at Cass Tech.
