Following an investigation from the school district and MHSAA, girl’s head basketball coach Kevin Richards has been suspended for the first six games of the 2013-14 season, according to Principal Matt Outlaw.
An anonymous letter, which included a packet of information containing tweets and a number of other items, was sent out to numerous parties by an unknown person.
The packets were sent to Grosse Pointe South, the school board, coaches in the tri-county area, news agencies and to the MHSAA, said Outlaw.
“We began with an internal investigation,” said Outlaw. “We quickly dispelled several of the claims that had absolutely no merit.”
However, there was one thing that caught their eye. They noticed an exchange of tweets between Richards and an eighth grader that attends St. Clare of Montefalco in Grosse Pointe Park. Richards also attended one half of a non-school sanctioned basketball game, in which that same student participated. These actions are in violation of MHSAA rules.
After recognizing this during the investigation, the three (Richards, Outlaw and athletic director Jeremy Hawkins) decided to contact the MHSAA for an external review of the issue.
After the investigation and review from the MHSAA, the organization decided on a three game suspension. The school matched the MHSAA suspension with another three games.
“We are committed to being squeaky clean as a school,” said Outlaw about the suspension.
