From the second the Lady Blue Devils took the floor in the regional final at Lake Shore High School on Thursday, March 8 it was clear they would be going home as anything but the victors.

South cruised to a 59-48 victory against the Dakota Cougars on the back of a 16 point game from Gretchen Shirar ’13 and 13 points from Bre’nae Andrews ’14. but it was the Lady Blue Devils defense was what really troubled the Cougars.

Dakota was forced to rely on taking quick shots most of their possession, because of South’s press and traps when they crossed half court.

“I thought our defense was top notch tonight,” said captain Claire Deboer ’13. “We were able to put more pressure on their guards this time which led to turnovers.”

The Lady Blue Devils were able to hold off a late run by Dakota, after they managed to make a few three point shots in the fourth quarter, the Cougars cut the lead to nine.

Head Coach Kevin Richards then called a timeout  to settle down his team, and they rebuilt their lead to over double digits, which they sustained for rest of the game.

The Lady Blue Devils played the Cougars twice this season, winning both games. However, each game was close with South winning by combined total of six points both games.

Even though South made an extended run in the playoffs last year, their experience is bringing more pressure as well.

“There is definitely more pressure in games like today because losing by one point last year in the state finals is an image in our heads that never leaves,” said Deboer. “We all have the same goal and that is to win the state championship this year.”

The rest of the Lady Blue Devil’s scoring came from Cierra Rice ’15 with 10 points, Aliezza Brown ’15 with 8, both ’15, Deboer with 7 and Christy Flom ’13 with 2.

The Lady Blue Devils will take on Bloomfield Hills Marian in the state quarterfinal on Tuesday, March 12 at Lake Shore at 7:30 p.m.
