In their first meeting of the year, South shut out rival North 1-0 on Wednesday, Sept. 12, after a great defensive effort by Alex Detwiler and Noel Fets, both ’13.

North controlled the ball for most of the first half. South had little offense but the defense kept up their side of the field allowing few shots at Fets, the goalie. After a great cross from Jeffrey Woolstrum ’13 was unconverted with under 10 minutes to play in the half, South went into halftime tied 0-0.

“He (Coach Stefan Harris) told us to win every physical ball and to treat this game like it was the last one of the season,” Robert Durand ’15 said.

The start of the second half held much of the same for both teams as North controlled the ball in South’s defensive zone. As fatigue started to set in, South’s athletes gained possession of the ball and Sam Archinal ’13 found Woolstrum to break the tie in the 26th minute.

“Jeff Woolstrum came up big for us tonight with the goal,” Coach Stefan Harris said. “Alex Detwiler’s play was great tonight as well. He’s more than just a soccer player to this team, he’s everything about this program.”

The goal energized the Blue Devils and they controlled the ball for much of the second half. North was not going to let South off the hook so easily, though. North’s best opportunity came with seven minutes left in the game when a Norsemen’s shot went off the right post and they failed to connect on the rebound.

“Everyone played tough tonight,” Detwiler said. “I was happy with everyone’s play and some kids came up clutch when we really needed it.”

The Blue Devils came out victorious giving them a 3-2-1 record in the MAC White Division and 5-5-1 overall record.
