In the first home game of the season, the Varsity Football team defeated L’Anse Creuse North (LCN) 28-27 in overtime.

In an exciting fourth quarter, the Blue Devils came back from a seven point deficit with 11 minutes left in the game. A 47-yard touchdown pass from Richie Kish ’14 to Tommy McShane ’13 tied the game at 21 with five minutes left in the game.

With 39 seconds left, LCN intercepted a South pass on their own 35-yard line. Four plays later and with six seconds remaining, LCN moved 40 yards and was setting up for a 47-yard field goal. The kicker missed, carrying the game into overtime.

In overtime, the ball was placed at the 10-yard line and each team is given one chance on offense.

South started overtime with the ball and Renell Perkins ’13 was given two straight handoffs and scored.

LCN scored after a one-yard touchdown run and elected to attempt a two-point conversion. This attempt failed, and South came away with its second win of the season.

“(The game) shouldn’t have been that close, but a win is a win,” said captain Max Roeske ’13. “The defense lived up to what everybody says they are. The good thing is that the offense showed improvement, but with 5 (or more) turnovers we’re not going to keep winning.”

Afterward head coach Tim Brandon attributed the come back to one thing.

“Guts. The kids wanted to win this game, they worked hard and they came back and got it,” said Brandon.

Offensively, Kish was nine for 25 with 210 yards and two touchdowns, McShane had two receptions for 46 yards and a touchdown, Jordan Spratt ’14 tallied four catches for 59 yards and a touchdown. Bennett Jackson ’14 also had one catch for 50 yards.

The defense was led by captain Jack Doyle ’13 and Jack Fry ’15 who combined for 20 tackles. On the defensive line, Tristan Russano ’14 had five tackles, two sacks, and a forced fumble. Captain Neal Fleming ’13 had two tackles, Zach Van Elslander ’13 had four tackles and a sack, and Branden Cooper ’13 chipped in two tackles and a sack.

Perkins and Cody Slaughter ’13 both recorded interceptions and combined for five tackles in the secondary. Perkins also rushed for a touchdown in the first quarter.

The Blue Devils host Fraser at 7 p.m. next Friday.
