After having lost many key players from last season, the boys basketball team is founded on new talent which has propelled them to a record of 8-3.

With strong play from the starters as well as key minutes given from the bench, the boys basketball team has started 3-1 in league play and has yet to lose back-to-back games, and has not lost at home once yet this season.

“There’s a lot of reasons for our great start in my opinion,” point guard Michael Calcaterra ‘16 said. “But one of the biggest reasons is just that we’ve really come together as a team.”

The team has scored more points than they have given up by an 80-point margin and is averaging just under 60 points a game according to Maxprep.com.

While the team is more of an interior-scoring one, it does have guys who can step out and hit from behind the 3-point line.

With key victories against teams like Port Huron, Lincoln, Port Huron Northern and Grosse Pointe North, there is a lot of confidence in the group and they are firing on all cylinders

Students who always went to games to support the school are excited about having something to cheer about, according to fans like Justin Mcmann ‘15.

“I have a younger brother on the team, and I’m friends with a lot of the guys on the team so I always go out to support them,” Mcmann said. “But it’s a lot more exciting going to the games now that they’re winning so much.”

The hot start has also attracted many new fans to the home games this year, including John Martinuzzi ‘16 and Josiah Gray ‘16.

“I really like the way the boys have been playing,” Martinuzzi said. “They remind me a lot of the 2004 Pistons, very tough basketball.”

“Our home atmosphere is pretty phenomenal,” Gray said. “Our crowd gets super loud, especially when it’s a close game.”

Even with the great start and the undefeated home record, a lot of seats in the student section have been left empty, worrying some of the players according to Calcaterra.  He hopes that will change as the season goes on.

“To be honest we don’t get too many fans at our games at all,” Calcaterra said. “So everyone should start coming to see us play because we are cold.”
