Girls basketball dominates Dakota, 71-47

Beating Dakota in dominating fashion, 71-47, the girls basketball team is looking to make a push to the playoffs.

The offense was on fire Friday night, scoring 71 points. Despite the offensive outburst, the girls still need to work on its defense, head coach Kevin Richards said.

“We need to focus more on defense,”  Richards said. “We set goals and we didn’t achieve all of them.”

Although the defense was not what Richards wanted, the offense was dominant and the girls were happy with their performance. The team was happy with work ethic for the entire game, said point guard Cierra Rice ’15, who led all players in scoring, with 25 points.

“We played hard and aggressive the entire game which is what we want,” Rice said.

During the entire duration of the game South had the lead and hopes to do this every game, center Benna Ames ’16 said.

“We’re trying to work on our energy so we can lead right away and keep it until the end,”  Ames said.

With only 11 games left in the season, South has its eyes on upcoming games. A big game that they all have circled on their schedule is their game against Cousino. Cousino gave South its only league loss, and they are looking for some redemption, Richards said.

“We play Cousino this Thursday,” Rice said. “This is a huge matchup, and we are all looking forward to this competitive game.”

South also plays Country Day and Southfield, both top ranked teams, and these matchups can lead to potential momentum into the playoffs, Rice said.

In the final push to the playoffs, South still has a lot to work on if they want to achieve the same success in previous seasons, Richards said. Since the start of the season there has been only one goal to return to the Breslin Center and that is what South is working towards.

“We have to get better,” Richards said , “We have three weeks of regular season left, and we have to continue to get better.”
