Boys swimming and diving wins first division meet

After a tough 0-5 start to the regular season for boys’ swimming and diving team, they were able to dominate their first MAC Red division opponent, Romeo, 142-43.

For Jacob Montague ’16, it isn’t easy starting off the season the way they had, after swimming for a team last year, who received 3rd place overall at states. The team is rather young this year after losing 5 seniors who had made it to the state level, yet with every meet, they’ll continue to improve, Montague said.

“It was definitely hard after being so successful last year, but I think we’ll improve coming off this win and get some momentum going into the rest of the season,” said Montague. “A lot of the teams we faced were top in the state, so I feel like further on in the season, a lot of those we saw, we’ll see at states. I think we’ll be ready for the tough competition.”

Head Coach Eric Gunderson is confident the team can finish the rest of the season out strong, considering five of their next six games are at home. Gunderson focuses on playing the best competition first, so that once they’re in the playoffs, they know what to expect from the state’s best, Gunderson said.

“We do like to swim tough competition, and it just so happens that we had four opponents that we knew we’d lose to,” said Gunderson. “We’re expecting to win the remainder of our games, and the goal at this point is to be 7-5 at the end of the season, win the county meet again, and win our 16th consecutive conference championship. We’ll see what we can do at the state level, but there’s a lot of season left.”
