Girls hockey has a successful weekend

By Adam Cervone ’17 | Staff Writer

The girls varsity hockey dominated the ice with a 5-0 victory on Saturday, Jan. 10 against Ann Arbor Pioneer and another victory over Plymouth Canton 6-2.

Going into the games this past weekend, head coach Elizabeth Rabidoux said, “I do not know of the teams that we are playing this weekend, one of the teams has a new coach, while the other has lost the core of their team as their seniors have left.”

Games like these could be good because the teams are fresh and lack the experience that the South seniors have, Rabidoux said.

“We played good together as a team and left Ann Arbor Pioneer in their zone the whole game,” Cal McColl ‘17 said. The games this past weekend were hard earned wins added to the girls hockey record, Rabidoux said

South’s girls hockey team has 34 players. Eleven of those players are what Rabidoux calls, “the varsity core”. These players are the ones who always play in the games no matter what. The rest of the team are less experienced players that fill the rest of the holes.

“The coaches set the rosters each night for who is going to play,” Rabidoux said.

Doing that could help South’s pick their best players for each night..

Last Wednesday, Jan. 7 game against Detroit Country Day was a South win due to a forfeit from the other team.

“Before the game we knew that the other team was not very good. I met up with the other coaches to say forfeit the game and then we will have our less-experienced players play their team, ” Rabidoux said.

This was a 1-0 victory on the scoreboard before the game even started.

Detroit Country Day knew that playing against South was going to be an immediate loss, due to the strength of South’s squad. But, they took the loss and played against the 23 players that aren’t a part of South’s varsity core.

The girls face off next against the Ladywood Blazers at 4:30 p.m. this Thursday, Jan. 15 at GPCR.
