The boys varsity basketball team defeated Warren Mott, 61-60, after a late fourth quarter comeback, yesterday, Jan. 6

South was fueled by stellar performances from Brennen Buszka ’17 and Jack Maher ’16, who had 15 and 11 points respectively.

The lead changed hands frequently throughout the first and second quarters, and the game was tied at the end of each.

Warren Mott began the third quarter hot, with a lay up on their first possession of the half and a three pointer on their second possession. They were able to jump out to an early five point lead.

South was able to fire back, Greg Harris ’16, Buszka, and Maher all hit key shots to get South back into the game in the fourth quarter. Buszka’s six third quarter points kept South within striking distance going into the fourth quarter, though they still trailed 48-43.

“Jack Maher is a very explosive kid, he’s got a motor, he goes hard thats the only way he goes,” head coach Troy Glasser said . “He gives us great minutes.”

South owned the fourth quarter. Buszka scored five points, including a three pointer to bring South within two points early in the quarter. Late in the quarter it was Buszka again, this time on the defensive side, taking a charge which gave South the ball down by two points with less than a minute left.

“Just keep fighting, we know we’re a deep team,” Sam Kingsley ‘15 said. “We know who ever is out on the court will give 100% and we trust them to make plays.”

Following Buszka’s forced charge, Harris was able to drive to the basket and hit a layup to tie the game at sixty.

“Greg Harris came in and gave us some instant offense,” Glasser said . “Greg got hot and we stepped up our defense.”

South forced a second charge on Warren Mott’s next possession and was able to get the ball back.

Hunter was fouled and hit one of two free throws, enough to give South the lead and a victory.

South plays Port Huron Northern tomorrow, Jan. 8 at home at 7 p.m. Glasser says in order to win the team is going to have to knock down their outside shots and execute better in the half court.

“It was a big program win against Mott, they made a deep playoff run last year,” Kingsley said .
