Neighborhood Club Game of the Week: Clippers vs Pelicans

By Jack Weaver ’15 | Staff Writer

Two teams, going in separate directions, are meeting for the first time in franchise history.

Without a single win (0-3), the Clippers are looking for a big time victory Saturday but it won’t come easy. The Pelicans, a team with more height and physicality than the Clippers, plan on simply driving, out rebounding and wearing down their smaller competition.

“It might be rough since they outmatch us physically,” Clipper guard Drew Macleod ’15 said . “But if we play well and outwork them, we have a slim chance.”

Tensions have been growing between Clippers star Jimmy Sands ’15 and Pelicans leading scorer Ryan Liagre ’15.

The two have played all their lives together, but something about this game has amplified the intensity to the next level, Liagre said.

“I’m averaging 24.3 PPG this season,” Liagre said . “I expect that to go up after this game. Sands is trash, he can’t stop me. I wouldn’t call it a big game, the Clippers or 0-3 and the Flock is 3-0, so it’s not a big game. My expectation is to beat the Clippers and send them home crying.”

Mat Millenbach ’15 also chimed in on the pre-game trash talking.

“We’ll obviously stomp the Clippers,” Millenbach said. “ But I’m looking forward to a fun game where everyone can play and have fun. The game is going to be such a blowout that we don’t really have much of a game plan”

Although the Pelicans’ confidence is high, Pelicans guard Justin McMann ’15 never wants to sleep on an underdog, especially after getting shocked by the lower seed in last year’s playoffs. He’s even nervous against Will Boyce ’15, a player averaging 0 PPG, 0.33 APG and 0 turnovers through three games, McMann said.

“Well if there’s one thing I learned over a long career of basketball, it’s that anything can happen out on that court so you can’t take any team lightly,” McMann said . “Nothing will be handed to us. Will Boyce is like a young Rajon Rando, a very crafty passer. We just have to make sure to keep our hands in the passing lanes and hopefully come away with some steals.”

Neighborhood club basketball is known as a league made up of lackluster players, yet between these two teams, six players have previously played either Freshmen or JV basketball at South.  Rob Durand ’15 encourages more people to come to games, especially the big game on Saturday.

“I would love to see people come because it’ll be a great game and good basketball being played,” Durand said.  “The league is very disrespected and underrated.”
