The 2014 Grosse Pointe South football team doesn’t just want a good record this year, they have their eye on the ultimate prize: a run at the MHSAA state playoffs.
For linebacker Mac Cimmarrusti ’16, it comes down to one thing for it to happen: teamwork.
“Our best asset we have is that we do not play as individuals, we play as a team,” Cimmarrusti said, “that will put us beyond other teams this year.”
Hardwork and determination comes to mind for coach Chad Hepner.
“Despite losing games, we have been in every game and have had a chance to win down to the last minutes,” Hepner said.
Although results haven’t been what they’ve wanted, the effort has definitely been there, Hepner said .
“There were no individual mistakes that cost us the game, it was many errors in the row that did it,” quarterback Sam Blanzy ’15 said.
The seniors will have to step up to show the underclassmen what it takes to play well in a big game, especially when the school is counting on a win, Blanzy said.
“The juniors and seniors have been in the playoffs before , so they will need to show the younger players how to cope with the stress,” Blanzy said.
South is very fortunate to have such high-quality players, Blanzy said . The Blue Devils might have a tough time playing with a limited number of players. The team will have to focus on staying healthy through the season if they want to make a run at the state title.
“As long as we stay healthy throughout the season the lack of numbers will not really affect us,” Blanzy said.
The football team plays their final home game against Henry Ford this Friday, October 17 at 7 PM.
