Boys basketball takes down another opponent to continue win streak

By Will Boyce ’15 | Staff Writer

After opening the season with a loss at the hands of  North, the boys varsity basketball team has won six straight games.

In their first game, the team lost 57-49 to their rival North, in a game that was a lot closer than the score would indicate.

“I think if we had a rematch against North, there would be a very different outcome,” said Dallian Burnett ’15. “In all honesty we are an all-around better team than them and should have beat them that first game.”

Jordan Maxwell ’15 said he is hoping the team gets a chance to play North in districts, defeat them and move as far as they can in the playoffs.

Since then they have defeated Chippewa Valley, Anderson, Plymouth, Divine Child, Port Huron Northern and on Friday Jan. 10 defeated Anchor Bay, 67-35.\

The team is already improving its record  from last season, which the team only had five victories.

At a point differential of 32, their victory over Anchor Bay was the largest of the season, Glasser said. That is the result of half time adjustments and great plays by Burnett on the defensive side of the ball.

“A strong senior and junior class has made us really tough to beat,” said Maxwell.

Although most games have been close, they have been winning, which is a step up from last year. The team won a total of five games last year, and now six this year, less than half way through the season.

“Our team works hard every day in practice and there is always competition between the juniors and the seniors so just pushing each other every day has paid off,” said Burnett.

Head Coach Troy Glasser attributed their success to hard work, dedication and experience. He noted that the team is sharing the ball better than ever, but that defense is their strength, taking pride in the fact that they have been holding their opponents to an average of 40 points.

Although the team is experiencing indisputable success, Glasser said there are specific aspects of the game the team needs to work on for upcoming games.

“I’d like to see us start executing our offense better, we’re not very clean,” said Glasser. “We don’t set solid screens, we have got to get a little more fundamentally strong.”

The team has a home game tonight against Clawson at 7 p.m.
