Football team faces emotional loss to Detroit Cass Tech 35-0

By Devlin Francis ’15 | Staff Writer

Losing their playoff game to Detroit Cass Tech 35-0 on Saturday Nov. 2, the Varsity Football team finished their season with a record of 6-4.

“This was a tough game,” said Head Coach Tim Brandon. “Cass Tech is a very good team, and I’m extremely proud of how we played today and all season long.”

South struggled offensively against a strong Cass Tech defense, failing to score any points.

On defense, South forced and recovered three fumbles, two by Captain Bennett Jackson and one by Mitch Scheppler, both ‘14.  Cass Tech’s offense still managed to score 35 points.

“Mistakes costed us this game,” said Brandon. “Not one mistake, but just mistakes overall, and we have to learn from that.”

Brandon hopes the underclassmen can learn from this, in order to avoid it in the future.

“I told them (the non-seniors) to look at the scoreboard and burn it into their brain,” said Brandon.  “We have the potential to do great things, but we have to earn it. I hope this can motivate them more than anything else to put in the work and then some more during the offseason.”

It’s tough for the seniors to have to go through this in their last game of South Football ever, Brandon said.

“The hardest thing that any coach ever has to do is say goodbye to his seniors,” said Brandon. “I’m proud of them for giving everything they’ve had to this program for the last four years. They’ll go on to do great things in college, with their careers, as husbands, fathers, they’re all going to do great things. I’m going to miss them.”

Captain Tristan Russano ‘14 is glad with how his senior season went, he said.

“It was a tough game, a tough season,” said Russano. “It was full of highs and lows, and really brought us together. I’m always going to cherish the time I spent with my brothers this year.”

Losing to Cass Tech was very disappointing, but Brandon is still proud of how his team played all season, he said.

“It was a great season and we did a lot of great things, no doubt,” said Brandon. “We won the division, beat North, made the playoffs, accomplished so many great things. I couldn’t be more proud of this team.”
