South’s Boys Varsity Tennis team served North, taking six of the eight matches to begin their regular season schedule.

“The boys played well; they had to play well because North came ready to beat us,” said Head Coach John  Willard. “They did their best, but our team prevailed.”

Starting the season as the fourth ranked tennis team in the state, South backed up that ranking with a dominating victory over North on their home courts.

Starting with the one singles match, Nick Paolucci ‘15 shutout his opponent with strong defensive play, winning 6-0, 6-0.

The number one doubles team of Will Norris ‘15 and Victor Flynn ‘14 struggled through a nail biter, but prevailed in the end, Willard said. The final score of their match was 7-6, 6-2.

Another noteworthy victory was Isaac Piecuch ‘14 at four singles, who won his match in dominating fashion, 6-1, 6-2.

“Isaac’s win was a big one for us at number four singles,” said Willard.

Patrick Willard ‘17, the only freshman on the varsity team,  won his number three singles competition 6-2, 6-3.

The young duo of Brendan Clune ‘15 and Nick Costakis ‘16 at number three doubles won their match 6-2, 6-3.

The doubles team in the number four slot consisting of Brian L’Heureux and Tomas Garberding, both ‘14, played in a close won, but pulled out the victory, 7-5, 6-3.

Winning the division is really going to be between South and Port Huron Northern, who are the best two teams in the division, Willard said.

“We have a couple season goals, first and foremost to win the MAC Red Division,” said Willard. “Second we really want to qualify for the State Championship.”

Willard explained how big of a loss it was when Colden Gosselin ‘14 injured his shoulder in a preseason tournament.  He was expected to play number two singles.
