Displaying an act of patriotism, the Young Americans For Freedom Club (YAF) gave a gift to the students at South on Wednesday, September 11.
Lining the walkways of the front lawn were 2,977 American flags, to represent and pay tribute to the civilians who lost their lives on that horrific day on which planes in the hands of terrorists crashed into the World Trade Center and the Pentagon.
“It was an incredibly patriotic act by the YAF club,” said Patrick Jackson ‘14. “I really appreciated approaching the school to see the flags and the respect they represented.”
The club also painted the rock with the design of the American flag reading the words “Never Forget” painted on the back.
This is the second time YAF paid tribute to those who lost their lives twelve years ago through the flags on the front lawn of the school. In addition to repeating the acts from last year, the Chairman of YAF, Drake Lyon ‘14, came on the announcements to initiate a moment of silence throughout South this year .
“Even though it’s been 12 years, it still is such a tragic event in our nation’s history. The flags are a great way to commemorate this, and show respect,” said Addie Walsh ‘15.
“As an American, I am a very patriotic person. Being overseas, I’ve seen the respect others have for our country,” said Lyon. “It’s always important to remember our history, and honor those have lost their lives at the expense of those who attempted to steal our freedom.”
The events of today were coordinated by Lyon and Connor Gillooly ‘14, although all of YAF helped prepare the front lawn to be ready when students arrive.
