In order to give South students a chance to perform their original compositions, South’s Tri-M will host their annual Composers’ Concert on Wednesday, June 5 at 7 p.m. in the auditorium, Tri-M advisor and orchestra teacher James Gross said.

Tri- M is a national musical fraternity for students who belong in band, choir or orchestra at South and are active members in one of the several ensembles. The organization puts on several concerts and induction ceremonies throughout the year, Gross said.

“It is nice to share with classmates what you have worked hard on, and it helps get your own music out there,” said Tri-M Orchestra Historian Kimberly Barbour ‘14.

The Composers’ Concert will include ten to twelve submitted works by Tri-M members and other South students, Gross said.

“It’s an opportunity for all South students, regardless if they’re in a music class or not, to have an opportunity to perform their own works,” said Barbour.

Students in Music Technology, Music Theory and Piano classes who do not necessarily participate in a musical group, have also submitted pieces they have written throughout the year, Gross said.

“Throughout the school, we have musicians, some play in rock bands, some are singer- songwriters who may not play an instrument or may not sing in the choir,” said Gross. “But they nevertheless have musical talent and ability and can compose their own music.”

Margaret Sohn ’16 said she wrote a song for an English class project on “Frankenstein” and later decided to submit the piece for the Composers’ Concert. The performance will include vocals, guitar and cello.

“I decided to submit my composition because I want to pursue songwriting in the future, and to have it performed would be a great way to start,” said Sohn.

In the past, students have submitted piano compositions, songs to be accompanied by acoustic guitar, as well as more elaborate ensembles. Depending on the composition, performances will range from one solo to a 12 to 15 piece instrumental ensemble or vocal group, Gross said.

“It’s really all over the map as far as size,” said Gross.

The concert will also include a wide range of musical styles, Connor Reinman ‘14 said.

“I expect it to be an eclectic mix of music from a wide range of styles and a wide range of creativity,” said Gross.

Students whose compositions will be performed on Wednesday include Reinman, Sohn, Hannah Ayrault ‘14 and Alyssa Campbell ‘16, Gross said.

Reinman, a member of South’s Concert Orchestra, says he has been composing since the beginning of his sophomore year and wrote the piece he submitted for the Composers’ Concert last June. Reinman’s string ensemble is a mix between classic and romantic styles.

“The Composers’ Concert is a great venue to have original compositions played by the best musicians South has to offer,” said Reinman.
