Riding a 13-game winning streak, the boy’s lacrosse team fell to Eisenhower 10-8, causing a share of the MAC Red championship.

The Blue Devils would start the game firing on all cylinders offensively, and shutting down fast-breaks on defense. After the first quarter South had a 2-0 lead, and they would maintain that two-goal lead going into the half up 4-2. It’s only right that on Senior Day, Andrew Hyde ’14 and Andrew Wright ’14 would score three of the four goals.

“In the second half we were still getting the looks we wanted, we just couldn’t finish,” said Jerry Coyle ’15. “There were too many dropped passes and missed ground balls.”

Missed opportunities would plague the team in the second half. Wright would complete a hat-trick, but it would be all Ike from then on, as they would score a late goal with 5.7 seconds left, and tie the game up at 6-6.

Ike continued to carry this momentum in the final quarter and got off to a 3-0 scoring run. Hyde respond cutting the lead back down to just two goals, but penalty trouble and good ball control on Ike’s part would keep any hopes of a comeback out of reach.

Although South would fall to Ike, they still were able to share the MAC Red conference championship and in head coach Don Wolford’s mind, a wake-up call is just what the team needed.

“This season has been a huge success,” said Wolford. “We can compete with anyone, but it also shows if we don’t bring our A game, we can lose to other teams too. The good thing is, it’s not like they beat us, to be honest, I really feel like we beat ourselves at moments.”

The Blue Devils will continue their quest for a state championship when they square off at home against Orchard Lake St. Mary’s on May 22, at 6 p.m.

Chase Urbach ’15 and the rest of the team seem to be as focused as ever heading into their second playoff game.

“With the talent we have on this team, I expect to go far,” said Chase Urbach ’15. “This is one of the best lacrosse teams I’ve ever played on and I have faith in everyone on this team that they will give 110% in practice and during games. It’s a whole new season now, with the same goal on everyone’s mind, to be 2014 state champions.”
