Boys baseball splits games in weekend tournament

This past weekend, the boys varsity baseball team played a double- header against Midland Dow High School at Dow Diamond.  Dow Diamond is home to the Great Lake Loons, which is an A team for the Los Angeles Dodgers.

“The two games went well and I am satisfied with our performance,” Justin McMann ‘15 said.  “We played decently, but I know we are capable of much more.”

The first game was very close with South squeezing past Midland Dow 9-8.  The team put together 17 hits, which is what kept them in the game.

Jacob Stone ‘15 had the game winning hit in the seventh inning and Douglas Graham ‘16 pitched a “phenomenal” game, said Andrew Fabry ‘15.

Fabry came into pitch to relieve Graham, only giving up two unearned runs over a course of three innings.

During the second game, Mark DerManulian ‘15 hit a home run in the minor league park and Zak Moyer ‘14 gave up nine runs in two innings pitched, said Fabry.

South ended up losing this game 13-2 after some mistakes in the field, inconsistent pitching and not connecting with the ball while hitting.

“We made way too many errors and our team has to improve on fielding,” Andrew Eaton ‘14 said.  “Coach is pleased with our hitting so we have to keep that up in order to put together a solid seven inning game.”

The team has a record of 14-13 and head coach Dan Griesbaum is continuing his 30th season and is approaching 700 wins.

The team faces off in an away game against L’Anse Creuse North on Wednesday, May 13 at 4:30.
