South has been named one of the five best girls sports programs in the state of Michigan by USA Today, Athletic Director Jeremy Hawkins said.
This is the ninth competition in USA Today’s “America’s Best” series, according to usatoday.com.
Hawkins said he was contacted by a USA Today writer and asked about the number of state titles South has won and how many college athletes the school has produced to help USA Today determine if South deserved to be one of Michigan’s top five programs.
“The real honor is being put in the top five since everything past here is determined by voting,” said Hawkins.
Students can vote as many times as they wish until noon on Friday, May 9, Hawkins said. In addition to the bottom of the story, the link is on both the school and district website on the left hand side. If South can gather the most votes in Michigan, they will advance to the national round.
Only two public schools in Michigan received this honor, Hawkins said. The schools South is competing against are Marian, Grand Rapids South Christian, East Grand Rapids, and Detroit Country Day.
