Record attendance at any varsity boys lacrosse game stands at 119 spectators, but on Tuesday, May 7, volunteer and coordinator Robin Dalby, parent Kristen Whitney, and students Mary Moesta ’14, Max Roeske ’13 and Bennett Jackson ’14 hope to break that record during their home match against North.

The idea was born from a group of students who have worked out in the weight room after school this past winter.

“The lacrosse players lifted weights all winter,” said Dalby. “So we said, ‘Let’s do something!’ It’s going to be fun.”

Dalby said he hopes to attract a crowd ranging somewhere from 150 to 500 people. He has notified all South sports teams and organizations that admittance is free and that they should attend the game and wear their team spirit wear. These organizations range from the choir, the basketball team and the football team. Hall monitors will also be in attendance sporting South lacrosse pinnies.

Attendance will be counted in total, all South alumni, parents, community members, even North students will be tallied at their entrance, Dalby said. After the game begins, a clicker will count the rest of the admissions. Results of the tally will be known the next day.

Tristan Russano ’14 plans to bring as much of the football team as possible, all wearing their jerseys.

On a good day, a regular lacrosse game might attract 60 people, Dalby said.

“It’s a good opportunity to bring the school together and create South pride,” said Russano. “It’s fun, you’ll get to see South play against their rivals.”

The team of students who coordinated this event made lacrosse pinnies and signs, and will hand out a limited number at the start of the game.

“It’s part of the total high school experience,” said Dalby. “We’re here for academics, sports, and socialization. It’s a great opportunity.”

All students are encouraged to go to the game and show support by wearing spirit wear.

It has been arranged with Caribou Coffee that all South students will receive 20 percent off of their purchase, and the offer extends beyond the date of the game. This provides an incentive to show a lot of South spirit, Dalby said.

“We expect the team to start playing some top notch lacrosse,” said Dalby.

If students like and support the aim for record attendance, Dalby says he would be willing to do the same for other sports.

“The original objective is to have fun, experience the atmosphere and support the school.”
