Prom? Students pop the question in cute, creative ways

By Margaret Fikany ’13 | Staff Writer

A dress, shoes and accessories can add up to hundreds, but the way a girl is asked to her senior prom is priceless.

Emily Kennedy ’13 was mistaken when she thought she could predict how her boyfriend Josh Gall ’13 would ask her. However, she was mistaken. Surpassing her wildest imagination, he took this special opportunity to a new level.

“I wanted to surprise her, so in her backyard, I set out candles in the middle of the night, spelling ‘Prom?’ and told her to look outside of her window,” said Gall.

Kennedy described how romantic and unique his approach was, and how it was everything she could have wanted.

Unlike Kennedy, Emily Westin ’13 was completely unsure of how she was going to be asked.

“I actually had no idea how I was going to get asked,” said Westin, “Or by who.”

Luckily for Westin, Reed Prentice ’13 already had something in mind. He understood the pressure that society puts young men to creatively ask someone to prom.

“He (Prentice) asked me to prom by writing it in chalk on my driveway,” said Westin. “I didn’t notice it until the next day, but once I saw it, I could not stop smiling and thought it was a cool way to ask.”

Although it may seem that people try to out-do one another with the way they ask, Westin said it truly is not a competitive phenomenon.

Possibly one of South’s most well-known couples, George Fishback ’13 and Ellen Neveux  ’13, knew they were destined to be prom dates for the last three years.

Fishback decided to take the law into his own hands.

“I was looking for a creative idea, and it just sort of came to my mind to ask my coach, Mr. (Joe) Srebernak, to pull over Ellen while she was driving,” said Fishback. “So he did and after he asked her questions about drug activity in the area, then I walked up with flowers.”

When Neveux was pulled over, she had no idea Fishback was behind it and truly thought she was going to get a ticket, she said.

“I was glad I was asked in a fun and creative way,” said Neveux. “Although I would have said yes either way.”

Fishback wasn’t the only date to scare his prom date.

Lindsey Makos ’13 was first worried when she got called down to Mrs. Higgins office, but her worries were soon replaced with excitement after she was handed two Red Wings tickets from Ryley Maher ’13.

“I had somewhat of an idea when I got the tickets that he was going to ask me to prom,” said Makos. “But I had no idea he would make it so exciting.”

While Makos and Maher were waiting in between periods, the big screen projected, “Lindsey, Will you go to Prom with me? –Ryley”.

“I thought this would be a good idea because we are both big hockey fans,” said Maher. “I wanted it to be something that meant just as much to her as it did to me.”

Alex Detwiler ’13 took a slightly more exotic and delicious approach to asking the girl of his choosing, he said.

“I asked Sia (Kefallinos ’13) by an idea from a kid on my soccer team,” said Detwiler. “Which was taking out the original message inside a fortune cookie and replacing it with another piece of paper asking her to prom.”

Kefallinos was surprised and thrilled by the creative way she was asked, she said.

“I had never heard of being asked through a fortune cookie,” Kefallinos said. “I just thought I was having dinner with my friends and all of the sudden I got a prom date and dessert all in one.”
