Powderpuff game to support Suicide Awareness this Sunday

By Adam Morris ’15 | Staff Writer

The powderpuff football game will be kicking-off this Sunday, November 9th, at the South field at noon.

The teams consist of junior and senior girls who signed up to participate in the event to support Suicide Awareness.  The senior team has about 13 girls playing along with 11 coaches.

“I am very excited to play in this game,” Nina Smith ‘15 said.  “I always love going to football games and it’s going to be a blast having the girls play.”

It is a seven on seven game of flag football that has many of the same rules as regular football, but will consist of the same rules as used in Neighborhood Club flag football.

“My hopes are that everyone participating ends up having an awesome time and feeling good about themselves for playing for such great causes,” Katie Kish ‘15 said.  “I would recommend powderpuff to anyone who enjoys socializing and making new friends all while learning and playing the game of football.”

During initial practices, about twenty girls showed up, but now the team is averaging only eight to nine girls per practice.

“My favorite part about powderpuff is watching the girls try to throw and catch and often times get hit in the face,” coach Mitchell Donovan ‘15 said.  “I would recommend getting organized earlier next year and make sure to plan the practices in order to get a stronger attendance from girls who want to play.”

Donovan is confident in his team’s abilities and predicts that the seniors will defeat the juniors with ease.

“I play wide receiver and despite the small turnout of girls at practice, the coaches have put a lot of time into the game and have taught us a lot of plays,” Smith said.  “I hope powderpuff continues because Katie and I have worked really hard to plan this so it will happen every year.”
