Process and styles

Tower Editor in Chief Cecile Walsh has a creative streak that slays. Her radiant extensions glide over her keyboard as she types up her articles. The rich colors simmer in the sunlight as she draws. One of the many arts she dapples in, Walsh paints nails that pop.

Walsh said she has been giving herself manicures ever since she was little. She uses gel, less damaging to the natural nails than acrylic and longer-lasting than regular polish, for a sleek look.

“One of my favorite ways to spend a Sunday is just to put on a movie then paint my nails, and that’s how I spend my afternoon and it’s a wonderful time,” Walsh said.

Her intricate designs are hand-painted and then set with ultraviolet light. When done properly, a gel manicure typically lasts one to two weeks.

“I’ve always enjoyed doing art and little doodles like that, so I started putting them on my nails and it’s a lot of fun,” Walsh said.

Colorful and eye-catching, Walsh coordinates her nails to the holidays: red and white for Christmas, pink for Valentine’s day and green for Saint Patrick’s day.

“‘I just think there’s so much fun to be had experimenting with colors,” Walsh said.

Where there’s no obvious theme, she said she paints whatever her heart desires.

“Sometimes it may seem super difficult or tedious to do nails, but once you get into it, it is really, really relaxing,” Walsh said. “If anybody’s interested, I think it’s a lot of fun and something that anybody can do.”

A small, unassuming store, new to the village, is

A small, unassuming store, new to the village, is home to a variety of cake flavors. Perfect to take home and enjoy casually or serve for celebrations, Nothing Bundt Cakes is a well-deserved addition to the community.

Approaching the store, I was unaware of the fact that I would soon enter a new favorite store of mine. A sign lit with blue lights and a polka-dot awning set the store apart from the rest. Inside, the colorful environment appeals to all visitors. With fun kitchen utensils and home decor for sale, this is the perfect place to buy a gift for yourself or others.

However, the appeal of the store comes from what is located behind the register: the wall of bundt cakes for sale. Hoping to get the most authentic experience, I asked for two of the most popular flavors, which were white chocolate raspberry and red velvet. Both flavors were adored by my family and myself and the cakes were gone within the hour.

The red velvet cake was perfectly sweet with a cream cheese frosting that balanced it out perfectly. The cake had milk chocolate chips in it that were also very pleasant. I typically try to steer away from red velvet products as the taste of chocolate can be overpowering, but that was not the case with this one. The cocoa taste in the cake was not too sweet, making it a favorite of mine. I’m not the biggest fan of chocolate chips in cakes, but this cake had the perfect amount, making them hardly noticeable.

The white chocolate raspberry bundt cake was my favorite of the two. It had an incredible raspberry filling at the bottom that tasted super fresh. What I liked about this bundt cake was that the raspberries did not overpower the taste of white chocolate and I could enjoy both. The tanginess of the raspberries was complemented perfectly by the frosting and the cake was super moist.

Overall I’d rate my experience at Nothing Bundt Cakes a 5/5. Cake is not my dessert of choice, but these surprised me in the best way possible. I’d highly recommend Nothing Bundt Cakes to anyone who is looking for something sweet. Whether it be to enjoy on your own or bring to a party, these cakes were incredible and I’m sure anyone who tries them would agree.

With the end of the school year in sight, it’s easy to get distracted. Teachers share advice to get students to succeed this spring.

The Unified Gymnastics Team of Grosse Pointe conti

The Unified Gymnastics Team of Grosse Pointe continues to make strong progress ahead of the regional and state competitions in early March. One month into the season, the team has established its culture and goals for the season. Natalie Whittaker ’27 was excited to join the team as an incoming freshman and emphasized building relationships with her teammates early on.

“I just wanted to make bigger bonds with the girls and it’s really fun to hang out with people who are positive and kind,” Whittaker said.

When looking at the small picture, Whittaker focused her goals for the meet on getting her double back handspring back on the floor and beating personal scores, in order to qualify individually for larger upcoming competitions.

“I was focusing on upping my beam and floor scores and focusing on the little details,” Whittaker said.

Meanwhile, Jessie Taylor ’26, from Grosse Pointe North, has been motivated for different reasons.

“I’ve already qualified for regionals in all my events so I’m trying to push myself through this ankle injury I’ve had for five years,” Taylor said.

When looking back on her past few years of competition, it’s been difficult but Taylor doesn’t just think about this version of herself, but rather her younger self who has been her own biggest inspiration.

“I’d say ‘little me’ is why I haven’t thought about quitting or anything like that,” Taylor said. “I want to make her proud.”

Taylor refocuses on the team and like Whittaker, credits the team for a hardworking yet enjoyable ambiance that keeps them all motivated and hungry to succeed.

“It’s never been awkward with any new people joining because we all just get along so well,” Taylor said.

Grosse Pointe North, the host of South’s choir performances for years, was packed on all fronts. The ticket line wrapped around a brick corner, and, comfortably sardined in velvet rows of seats, community members ranging from parents, teachers, students, and board members made small talk as they waited for the thrilling hush that would fall along with the lights.

Mari Mueller ‘24, who joined choir in her junior year and is now in both South and Pointe Singers respectively, emphasized the relationship between audience and performer.

“I feel like when the crowd is louder, we also feed off of that energy and it just hypes us up, and there’s such a good vibe,” Mueller said.

To Mueller, while the performance itself is a showcase of their work, the true preparation comes during an intense week of rehearsals called “tech week.”

“The snow days and the cold days really set us off, but we still came to rehearse at points and rehearsed on our own at home,” Mueller said. “So, it’s more so the rehearsal leading up to comp that makes preparation really work.”
