The game started with not much aggression coming from South, with two and a half minutes left in the first quarter South was down by 7 points. Considering South lost against Romeo last year, Maddy Benard ’25 knew South had to take charge.
“We knew Romeo was going to be very aggressive and physical so we knew we had to come out strong. Especially after losing to them last year we really wanted to win this time.” Benard said.
Benard has been injured the past couple days, but stayed determined to pull her weight so she played through to help take down Romeo. Although she wasn’t very proud of the way she played, she was proud of how the game turned out.
“I could’ve attacked them better and was not very proud of the way I played, because I have a sprained ankle,” Benard said. “But I am happy with the way the game ended up, and think it’s a great start to the season.”
During the 3rd quarter Maddy Benard ’25, and Morgan Duff ’26 each made a shot back to back which helped turn the game around, and South continued to stay in the lead. With four minutes left of the 4th period, South was paving the way 36-29.
Team manager Maya Burton ‘25 tries to help ease the stress and pressure on her team by supporting her teammates.
“I always cheer and clap for my teammates during their games, I try and help motivate them by making sure they don’t become discouraged and they always feel supported even if they aren’t playing their best.” Burton said.
This was a pretty aggressive game and by the end Romeo had a total of 5 penalties which meant many free throw shots given to South. Catherine Pattie ‘25 says she tries not to think too much when she’s standing at the free throw line and to just shoot.
“I know I need to focus and do my part for the team so I try to not think about it and do my best to benefit my team,” Pattie said.
