On Thursday, Dec. 19, the Boys Swim and Dive team had their first meet against Stevenson and Liggett, at the home pool. The South boys swept the competition, tallying a total of 134 points throughout all of the events, with Stevenson having 34 and Liggett with zero. The team is off to a great start this season, despite losing multiple star graduating seniors, including Ben Bryan and Troy Lui (both ’24) who went on to swim at the collegiate level.
However, despite the loss of several talented graduated seniors, the team still has quite a few returning state swimmers, and promising freshmen, including Brady Bond and Everett Wood, both ’28. This season, the South boys are seeking to maintain their legacy as one of the top Division 2 Swim and Dive teams in the state. Owen Mulcahy ’25, four-season veteran swimmer and team captain, is looking forward to maintaining South’s reputation.
“This biggest goal this season is to continue the legacy of the past 26 years of winning the MAC Red Championship,” Mulcahy said. “It has become a standard for our program to win our conference and keep the streak alive.”
The Mac Area Conference (MAC) Red is the most competitive division the team can be in for Division 2 schools in the area, so this multi-decade-long streak is not a little accomplishment for the program. As far as the first meet statistics go, Mulcahy is beyond pleased with the team.
“It was the first high school meet for many of our swimmers, and I’m proud of how they performed,” Mulcahy said. “The future is very bright from Grosse Pointe South Swimming with this incredible Freshmen class.”
Similar to many senior athletes, the Swim and Dive Team at South has been a tremendous part of Mulcahy’s life for the last four years, and he is sad to be leaving his teammates next year. He is especially grateful for the closeness of the team, as each grade, Freshmen through Senior, is incredibly close with one another.
“I want to look back and know I gave it my all,” Mulcahy said. “As Captains, Jack Finazzo, Duncan Richards, and I want to set an example for the younger kids on the team and be leaders they can look up to. We want to leave the torch in good hands.”
