Grosse Pointe Public School System’s Operating Millage renewal passed with the support of 72% of votes. The proposal was to renew the operating millage that passed in 2019, accounting for 22% of the 2024-25 budget.
The money passed will continue to be used for essential services including student transportation, many educational programs, teacher and staff salaries, classroom supplies, and maintenance. Since it is a renewal, there will be no increase in taxes to properties in any of the five Grosse Pointes.
If this had not passed it would have been devastating for the GPPSS 2024-25 budget, which has yet to be approved by the district’s School Board. The current proposed budget for the 2024-25 school year is $102,676,319 as of July 16, 2024 school board meeting. Without this funding, the budget would have been reduced to $80,084,522, losing over 22 million.
The budget has been a complicated issue for the School Board in past years, as they are grappling with declining enrollment and teacher resignation. This passing saved the district weeks of discussing how they would deal with the over $20 million loss.
